The Institute for Quantum Studies at Texas A&M; University invites applications for a research/teaching program for physics undergraduates. The main objective of the program will be to provide a dynamic and stimulating environment in which the students will be able to interact with research scientists and discuss research problems in the field of laser physics and quantum optics.

The program will consist of three parts: A two-week workshop (June 9-20, 2003) at Texas A&M; University that provides hands-on laboratory experience in quantum optics, another two weeks (June 23-July 3, 2003) at Casper College, Wyoming, involving lectures on quantum mechanics and aspects of quantum optics, as well as research seminars by leaders in the field, and finally, a last week spent at the annual conference on Laser Physics and Quantum Optics (July 7-11, 2003) near Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

To be eligible for the program, an applicant must be enrolled in or have completed the junior year of an undergraduate degree program in physics or a closely related subject during the period of the program. Some background in quantum mechanics, electromagnetic theory and optics will be valuable. Selected participants will receive free lodging, and a $2500 stipend to cover travel and incidental expenses.

The application form along with two recommendation letters should reach the program coordinator by May 16, 2003. These can be sent by mail or (preferably) email. Please indicate "RUG Application" in the subject line of the communication. You will receive a response within 2 days of the receipt of your application regarding acceptance or the need for more materials.
